Tanvi Kant uses reclaimed textiles to make one-off pieces of jewellery.
Inspired by the hand-stitched hem of her mother's silk sari, Tanvi creates jewellery from wrapped and bound lengths of fabric, which are combined with porcelain forms.
At the Biennale Tanvi is taking items of jewellery made from old saris and scarves, which have been transformed into large neckpieces and bracelets.
'The pieces are made using a combination of three different fabrics,' explains Tanvi. 'The long wrap pieces can be worn draped around shoulders reflecting the origins of the fabric.
'The simple but repetitive techniques I use, such as whipping, binding, knotting and sewing develops in response to the materials I use. The fabrics are transformed and in some pieces their original form is visible, allowing the wearer to feel and remember the origins of the work.'
Tanvi won the Association for Contemporary Jewellers Award at the New Designers' exhibition in London in 2005.
